The battle against Crete
Uploaded by: Vizaar
Video Description:
The Battle of Crete (German Luftlandeschlacht um Kreta; Greek
Μάχη της Κρήτης) began on the morning of 20 May 1941, during World War II, when Germany launched an airborne invasion of Crete under the code-name Unternehmen Merkur (Operation Mercury). The operation was successful in terms of taking the island from the Allied forces holding it, but th
e victory was so costly that the Germans never again launched a major airborne mission.

Kesslering, and Rommel wanted to take Malta...Student convinced Hitler, that Crete was needed, and would be less defended, as the British hadn't been there long enough, nor would they fight as feriously as they would for Malta. Malta, and Gibraltor would have sealed the Mediteranen, and allowed the Axis forces passage in the Suez Canal, raw material from the far east, and enough oil from Iran to swim in...Instead he attacks Russia...yeesh

Actually that's the story my own mom told me. She said that they were very gentle with the Greeks and if you needed something you'd go ask them and they'd oblige. That's all she remembered. Naive or whatever...you can NOT say they were a cruel occupying force.

I have Cretan friends. Those mountainpeople are the wrong ones to mess with. Greek and Cretan people were the first to really stand up to the axis. The Brittish were only retreating and arrogant. The Australian an NZ forces did fight however.

The Germans executed 3000 Cretans, randomly, destroyed many villages, to teach civilians of Europe not to resist the Germans. (Furor Germania) But the Cretans were used to Turks, who are more barbaric, so they were not freightened and kept hunting for Germans.

The Battle of Crete ... ( 3 months ago by Crete1943)
The Battle of Crete took place early on against a small country of just 6 million Greeks, who had been pushing back Italians since October 1940and were invaded by three Axis countries; Italy, Bulgaria and Germany in 1944. The fact that German Airborne Forces were not used again during WWII, testifies that it was a great one, still pending proper understanding and appreciation by all parties concerned. My family was in the midst of it and I lost my grand dad during that period in History

If the Battle Crete ... ( 3 months ago by Crete1943)
If the Battle Crete had been a success doubt not that the corp would have seen more action in other war fronts. The para's career ended in Crete, and that is fact that helped enormously the Allied effort as a whole in the ensuing years, when Nazi Germany threw everything it got in the battlefields, and in that respect the Battle of Crete having contributed in the loss of some of Nazi Germany's best-trained units, was a great one and then some.
It was the biggest ... ( 3 months ago by vetdino)
It was the biggest air-born operation in war history and Hitler lost more than 4.000 paratroopers (officially)... if he hadn't spent such human resources in Crete he could have used then in Moscow that winter, which would collapse the Soviet union and thus end the war on the eastern front... imagine that...

Great footage! Most of the heavy fighting was cut from this and jumped straight to the airplane landings at malmedy once the airfield was clear. I think they showed a rare shot of the crash landing attempts north of the airfield attempting to get MUCH needed supply onto the ground. however, the airfield was still under direct fire of machine gun and brit artillery so they opted simply to crash land planes north of the field. peoples comments here are total lack of military strategy or history.

Yes, penjo, you are right. Italy invaded Greece on October 28th, 1940. Germany invaded Greece (to help the Italians in April 1941 and Bulgaria as an Axis ally opportunistically also invaded Greece and "annexed' north-eastern Greece in 1944. To recap (which was the essence of my meassage in the first place): Greece was invaded and occupied by three Axis armed forces between 1941 to 1944; Italy, Germany and Bulgaria. Crete alone was occupied from 1941 to 1945 by Germans and Italians.
