The fact is, ... ( 3 months ago by dgoren1)
The fact is, whoever is bashing Atlanta doesn't really know what they are talking about. I live here, I was there for the whole thing and can tell you the REAL facts, both good and bad. The transporation system was pretty overwhelmed, and I didn't like all of the t-shirt and gift shops down on the main thoroughfares. Of course, there was the bomb, the the organizers decided that the park should be open to all, and the bomber picked an easy target. In hind-sight, sercurity should have been there.
Part 2: Now the ... ( 3 months ago by dgoren1)
Part 2: Now the good. Security at the venues were air-tight. The venues themselves were world-class. The events all took place with no issues. The local people volunteered and were super-friendly. The city did NOT leave behind ANY debt to its citizens. The opening and closing ceremonies were good (but not as good as China). To base these games on the cauldon is a joke. Some artist came up with it. It's subjective. I wasn't crazy about it, either. These games were good overall, with a few issues.

Part 3: Finally, the London organizers are basing their games largely on Atlanta, not China. They don't have a large, communist government with an open-checkbook. Atlanta made money. I'm GLAD we didn't build more rail lines for a 2-week event. When the crowds left, we'd be left with debt and more than we need. With a few problems, Atlanta pulled it off. Comment if you may, but if you weren't here, you don't know.

Sorry for having my own opinion about somthing that i cherished in my childhood. Sydney put me to sleep, most over hyped olympics ever. I really looked forward to them too. And i wouldn't know about the LA games because i was only a year old.

It was a silver 1996 Summer Olympic Games coin, and that's when I first heard of the Olympics... I watched it on TV and was amazed at what they're doing! = julius923, you rock for posting this video!

That was a camera suspended by 4 cables. They had a camera sytems in which the camera could be moved anywhere all over the stadium about ~30 feet above the ground. The cables were very long and computer controlled.

I watch this and I'm filled with a pride of how great America can be. This was a time (1996) when everything was going right. The economy was booming, people were happy, there were no wars, Clinton was running the country flawlessly, and the United States was looked upon as a place of hope and moral strength by the rest of the world. 12 years later, and look what the Neo-Cons have done to all that. Hopefully Barack Obama can return us to the stature that we as Americans took for granted.

Lighting the cauldron is not about the pageantry, it is about the man or woman who lit the cauldron and what he/she symbolizes in the name of humanity.
