oh yes, they did so, indeed! But the renamed it according to the previous, classical (Vardar=Axios, by Herodotus) names, before they changes to the Southern Slavic languages. In Ottoman Macedonia many languges were spoken: Turkish, Greek, Ladino, Romanian variations, Bulgarian variations. Greeks fought against Bulgarian and turkish names. The same as Turks and Bulgars did later, or they had done in the past.
