st significant early 20th century monuments, and is the most beautiful Art Deco specimen in Athens. Its façade is decorated with mosaics, sculptures and grey and pink marble. It was designed in 1930 by the famous greek architect Vassilis Kouremenos (1875 -- 1957). The building was listed as protec
ted by the ministry of physical planning in 1978, along with another eight on the same street, and as a Work of Art by the culture ministry in 1988. After fierce debate and a hung vote which was resolved by the chairman's double vote, it was recommended that the building at 17 Dion. Areopagitou be
de-listed as a Work of Art, so that it may also be de-listed as protected, together with its neighbour, and be demolished. The reason: the buildings partly block the view between the New Acropolis Museum and the Acropolis. Demolishing the two listed buildings would mutilate the architectural conti
nuum of Dionysiou Areopagitou, which helps make this walkway one of the most interesting and beautiful in Europe. It would also vanquish an important piece of our modern urban history. Ironically, this is for the benefit of a museum site, whose mission should be to preserve and transmit memory, not
to destroy it.

can't they MOVE the building? Buildings are moved every day with huge machines and cranes. They can pick up the entire building and move it a few meters up the street?

They will come from all around the world for Acropolis. But yet some poeple think Greek modern urban history is more inportant than the symbol of the ancient Greek civilazation. ps: this street is one of the most beutiful in Europe becouse of Acropolis. Not becouse of the building of D.Areopagitou 17. It's beutiful however... A piece of art! I hope they will move it :)

just move the damn building! I live in LA and they move huge buildings here all the time...they shut down the entire highway over night and move it. Why can't they move these two, relatively small buildings, down the street?

The whole story is a joke. The story with the socialists is a joke too. Though, the present government with those idiots in charge can's think any other solution. And "filarako" just for your small head, when the socialists were in government with Kastanidis minister, they moved the building of old train station in Thessaloniki. So of course ther is a solution and very easy one. But being uncapble is the most dangerous of all..

Socialists was never in goverment... FAKE-socialists however was in goverment for about 20 years... Me, my small head and everybody else desire a suitable solution and NOT the destruction of these beutiful buildings... Be more polite next time.

The Acropolis versus the art deco building on Areopagitou is a fake dilemma. I'm not entirely sure why they want to destroy it but I suspect it has to do with whomever is going to lease the cafeteria/(restaurant?) of the new museum, they're probably paying alot of money and they don't even want this minor nuisance that the building might be causing.. It's a disgrace that even now after we have realized the crime of destorying the old Athens buildings that they are even considering this..
