Gravity - From Newton to Einstein - The Elegant Universe

Uploaded by: Gabebro1
Video Description:
From the NOVA PBS series "THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE', host Brian Greene guides us through Newton's discovery of gravity to the explanation of it, through Einsteins Theory of Relativity.
Brian Greene is a theoretical physicist and one of the best-known string theorists. Since 1996 he has been a professor at Columbia University. The Elegant Universe was adapted for a three hour program in three parts for television broadcast in late 2003 on the PBS series NOVA. http://www.pbs.or

This explanation ... ( 3 months ago by elephantinpajamas)
This explanation doesn't work for me. It begs the question, what does the "fabric" of space-time consist of? How is it that mass warps the fabric? In the model one literally sees a fabric distorted by the heavy object sitting on it but this seems absurd: if space is empty there's no trampoline. so what is the mass having an effect upon?
You forgot about ... ( 2 months ago by imTKA)
You forgot about dark matter, its the fabric that binds the universe
Have we really ... ( 2 months ago by elephantinpajamas)
Have we really added to the discussion by saying "dark matter?" Here's wikipedia: It has been noted that the names "dark matter" and "dark energy" serve mainly as expressions of human ignorance, much as the marking of early maps with "terra incognita."
Well, how biger the ... ( 2 months ago by xzaz2)
Well, how biger the star how bigger the mass how bigger the gravity i guess. Wen you remove it there will be now gravitiy
uh, i would like to ... ( 2 months ago by imTKA)
uh, i would like to argue with you, but the word"wikipedia" means you dont have a mind of your own and just read semi-correct facts. Plus it doesnt say that on wikipedia. And if your trying to point out that im ignorant than please dear god dont answer my comment. Because somehow in wikipedia it says ", dark matter is hypothetical matter that does not interact with the electromagnetic force, but whose presence can be inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter" nothing about ignorance.
I like to argue ... ( 2 months ago by imTKA)
I like to argue with facts of my own. But now you will answer again, Saying things like i didnt write that right. But here's the surprise! Im not english! im russian, and little mistakes wont change the fact that i can argue about this becuase i love physics so lets talk without wikipedia. just our own thoughts.
Cheers
I pasted from Wiki, ... ( 2 months ago by elephantinpajamas)
I pasted from Wiki, it's there before the Contents in the article. But fine, I can see where you wouldn't think much of wiki. I understand it's inferred. Here's a paste from another article: "Much like when you drive your car through a light snowfall, dark matter "sticks" to the Solar System when it is gravitationally bound by the Sun and planets." So now, dark matter isn't the source of binding but is itself bound. Please enlighten me.
Lol i dont know i ... ( 2 months ago by imTKA)
Lol i dont know i thought it was the bind, because its everywhere in the universe, im just a mind who's trying to find it out, thats why im going on the Physics Faculty in the Moscow State University NExt year. I think dark matter fills the whole universe, but what it does is not completly understood
But from what I've ... ( 2 months ago by elephantinpajamas)
But from what I've seen it has different hypothetical density to account for different rates of movement, say our solar system vs. the MW galaxy. So what's causing the varied density?
Im not sure maybe ... ( 2 months ago by imTKA)
Im not sure maybe its waves of space and time that are sent from other galaxies when a star dies...not sure but ill keep reading =)
Thanks. Good luck ... ( 2 months ago by elephantinpajamas)
Thanks. Good luck with the studies.

i've always know that gravity was the bending and warping of space-time, but if that's the case... where do gravitons come into play?
Just like it said ... ( 1 month ago by jsdhesmith5)
Just like it said at the end, Einstein was still unhappy with his findings. Someday someone will come up with a better explenation, but then again we may never know?

okay im going to sound stupid right here but in phsyics i learned that gravity=9.8m/s and he said speed of light and gravity traveled at the same speed :O.... idk im confused there
i believe 9.8 m/s ... ( 1 month ago by eseskay99)
i believe 9.8 m/s per s is the accelleration for an object falling on Earth only. Each object, each planet has it's own acceleration value.

yeah i think that we would only have a smaller amount of gravity pulling us in earth is greater than other planets and space

It's called string theory. After general relativity, Einstein started working on string theory but never had time to finish it. String theory is basically the ultimate theory that explains well... everything really. This video is a part of a 2 hour(?) documentary called An Elegant Universe. It tries to explain string theory to the viewer.
