Fender Rhodes tech: voice your Rhodes piano

Uploaded by: volvoxburger
Video Description:
To get the very best sound, there are several necessary adjustments on your Rhodes. Together these can be referred to as "voicing" your Rhodes.
This video walks you through the process. You'll want to get the tech manual and review the procedures there, but this video will help you know what it will look and sound like when you do it. Fixing problems with the setup will do more to get a killer sound than any outboard electronics can. Pl
ease note: I'm not a Rhodes tech, I'm a player. If you have a gripe about the video, I am only showing it for information purposes. This may not be the only way to get a great sound, or even the best way. If you like to read, there's a written description of what's going on here: http://music.linea

It is actually the felts striking the tine when they return back to stop the tine. They are new and kind of hard compared the the stock felts.

hy i don't understand where is the second escapement adjustment . first i've seen that is on the second coil spring from behind of the tine but the second location for adjustment? . help me please
Second location is ... ( 10 months ago by volvoxburger)
Second location is shimming the harp supports. From the service manual: Adding or subtracting shims from the Harp Supports (Figure 4-3, 2) should be resorted to ONLY for the purpose of establishing Escapement at the extreme Bass (left) Tone Bar (1/4" minimum to 3/8" maximum) (6.350mm minimum to 9.525mm maximum) and the extreme Treble (right) Tone Bar (1/32" minimum to 3/32" maximum) (0.794mm minimum to 2.381mm maximum).

hello. having recently seen one in real life, i have to ask: is there a d-i-y instructional guide on how to create even just one of those coil + magnet + spring + rod collection? i was amazed at the beauty of what lay underneath the lid, and have been hoping to figure out how to make just one ring at a frequency and then capture + amplify it. would you have a way of explaining how the coil+magnet responds to the vibration of the metallic rod, and what the idea behind it is?:)

I think what you are looking for is US Patent number 2972922. It describes it in enough detail to create it, as patents are required to do.

Great video... just wondering about the top octave or so of the rhodes where the wood core tips are.. is the process any different? I glued in some new hammertips yet I really struggle with that top octave (even after 15-20 years of playing rhodes)... it just seems to pop all the time.. any tips?
Hey orange, is your ... ( 8 months ago by volvoxburger)
Hey orange, is your question about the timbre adjustment specifically? For escapement, I tend to shoot for a distance that lets the note speak when played pianissimo. I don't get much difference in the timbre in the top part of the range no matter where I dial the tine in relation to the pickup.

Worst problem I have in upper range is sustain. I have about 4 notes deader than the rest, and tonebar clips don't seem to improve them much. I've snugged my tine mounting screws down and now the only thing left would be new grommets and/or springs.
Yeah my question is ... ( 8 months ago by orangefunk)
Yeah my question is mainly about getting a sound which does not sound over loud, dead or muted. It seems that its very much trial and error more so than the other notes... Love your videos by the way.... your rendition of Cold Duck Time is wonderful... what a great tone... :-)

0.375" which is 3/8". 3/8" is factory spec. I redid mine later with a slightly thinner block (0.340). You can read more in the link in the description.

Hi man, tks for posting this video. I have a problem with my rhodes. One of the keys have a very short sustain. All notes lasts around 6 seconds but this one last one 1 second, it's like a staccatto. I checked the foam that chokes the tine but nothing is touching the tine or the bell. Do you know how to fix it?
Here's a few things ... ( 4 months ago by volvoxburger)
Here's a few things to check, in the order I'd try them: 1) make sure the screw that secures the tine to the tonebar is tight--looseness here will kill sustain. 2) check for cracking or excessive hardness in the rubber grommets that the two screws mounting the tonebar to the harp pass through. Usually they would all go bad, but this is a sustain killer too. Generally check for anything else that stops the tonebar from freely vibrating.

Thanks a ton for the video, I just bought a Mark I for a great price and got the thing in gorgeous condition with this video. I had a question i was hoping you could help with. My Eb4 is about 5 cents sharp, but the spring is already at the very end of the tine. Is there anything else I can do to fix that?

Your rhodes is setup a lot different than mine; there's no way I could use a key block the way you are. What year is yours? By the way thanks a lot for the information it has helped me tremendously!
Also I was reading the post below should my springs be near the end of my tines??? because they're not..THANKS AGAIN!!
