He was a bit greek and a bit macedonian. It's true that the the old Macedonia was greek, but the 'suthern greeks' never saw Macedonia as a part of greece. When you talk about plain history you should have heard Demosthenes, a politician in Athens calling them barbarians and stuff. So what I meant to say was that Alexander wasn't greek like his suthern neighbours. Of course he was like the greeks and people accepted him to be greek if the greeks back then had accepted him too.Clear?

First of all, Demosthenes call as barbarian only one Macedonian king and not all the ancient Macedonians and he did that to defame him! You must read the entire oration of Demosthenes and the reasons of his oration, because if you read only a word or a phrase then indeed issued a total different story! Second:The word BARBAROI used and keep on used from the Greeks to describe savages-uncivilized peoples and not particular foreigners! We have other word for the foreigners and that is: KSENOI

Truly the ancient Greeks (Macedonians-Spartans-Athenians-Corinthians-Thebans-etc.) many times conflated the words BARBAROI and KSENOI because for them foreigner = uncivilized = No-Greek But they also used the word BARBAROI as a slandering against their compatriot opponents; it was like label them savages/rubes! Demosthenes was hog-wild against Phillip II, and that because he could not stomach the passing of Greek leadership from Athens to Macedonia. With his oration, was trying to convince that Philip not worth it as a leader of Greece, he could even sell his own soul to the devil to convince, so naming him barbarian or even saying that Philip not worth even as slave the words that coming from him doesnt surprise a bit, because he desired an Athenian hegemony!

If you read the entire oration of Demosthenes, when he fails to raise the peoples against Philip he finally admits that ALL Macedonians were PROUD GREEKS! either If Philip was foreigner, there wouldnt be a need for Demosthenes to try that hard to convince and at last to fail to do that! If Philip was foreigner, then he never mind that called him Barbarian! But Philip get Demosthenes words as vituperation!
