| sorry were you on crack when you typed that? i mean i agree totally that hendrix's creativity was revolutionary, his passion and all that, hes one of my fav, but "hendrix didn't use scales n modes and he has more theory than others because of his improv skills?" this is bullcrap. hendrix did use scales. When anyone plays a line and it doesn't sound out of tune and horrible, he IS using a scale consciously or unconsciously (can be in a form of minor scale or major or even chromatic). |

| and "modes sound like crap"?? you have a very wrong conception of musical theory and have no idea what are scales and modes my friend, im not a theory freak or anything close to that. but scales and modes are just tools of improvising, what decides if the playing sounds good or bad is the player's note choice, phrasing, etc. |

| yeah that was my point someone below said his friend thinks that satch songs are all the same, so what i meant was that it's either his friend is not a guitarist or he is a fan of alternative rock, cos i have a friend which is a big fan of linkin park and alt rock and he totally doesn't understand this kind of music or why i listen to satch. some people think that brad delson is the best guitarist ever and it just blew my mind that such naivety does exist. |

| Personally, I believe he actually did figure out the pentatonic, and basic modes, but the more complex stuff like the stuff Satch and the other virtuoso players use are more difficult to figure out, though I don't think it's beyond anyone. What I mean to say is I think he consciously used the pentatonic scale, but just didn't know the name of it... or maybe he did, who knows? |

| Sorry for the confusion. By not using different scale modes I mean he didn't use A lydian or G mixolodian or anything like that. Personally, I'm not very fond of of these scales, although there are some guitarists who use them extensively. |

| saying "I don't like scales" is kind of weird and funny to me because it's like someone saying "I don't like sentences, but I'm ok with alphabets" but he's trying to communicate, you know what i mean. all great players are great because they know how to 'phrase' so they can communicate what they want to say with their music (yes phrasing is a musical term), but how can you phrase well if you don't like your sentences? |

| sorry i'm not trying to attack/offend you or anything, i was in that position years ago i remember myself thinking "what are these scales?, they're just so hard to learn and so 'theoritical bullshit', i think no problem to just rely on feeling and 'guess' the notes when doing improv" but then after some time i decided to learn it, and i have become a much much better player because of that, im not saying that i'm an wicked player/expert or anything like that, im still learning |

| I don't think we're on the same page here. In my comment I was specifically referencing scale modes. These are quite complicated, but I'll try my best to explain them in a nutshell. In a C major Scale there are the following notes: CDEFGABC. If we play the exact same scale, but start on a different note, we have what is called a scale mode (e.g. DEFGABCD is D Dorian mode). It was these specific modal scales that I was expressing my distaste for. Sorry if I confused you. |
