Email comment to me. What Bill said is accurate, but he should have added: methane is odorless, as is carbon dioxide--and those two components are about 99% of landfill gas.

About 75% of the gas would be flared IF a state-of-the-art LFG collection and control system were installed. But Hyland has not done that because it has been able to put off triggering the requirement to do so by underestimating its gas generation rate.

Even after such a system is installed, about 25% of the gas generated will escape the system uncontrolled, more when the system malfunctions or for some other reason shuts down. This comment is from someone who has worked in landfill design. He is fears to speak openly about this because his job will be at risk.
