Landing at London's Gatwick airport after a early morning flight Venice and Back. Great weather!! First time I have ever sat in the Jumpseat landing at Gatwick, is a very interesting final approach racing the cards down the road to the right.

hi im an a340 pilot, and actually it means to "retard" or reduce your thrust to idle. it doesnt mean slow.

Mattinhk are you an A340 pilot really??? U are 21 yrs old, but it's ok, i belive, just it's really intersting for me, usually the young pilots got a job on a320 and 737, but on the a340 or the other bigger plane like ,,triple seven,, or a330, 747... require a lots of hour on type...but it's all right i heard that somebody got a F/O job on 744 who was 22 yrs old...but i say again i belive, just it is a very unsual thing, and of course i'm very envious :D:D:D anyway the video is great. :)

"Retard" means to 'pull back on the flight stick'...as in "pull up". It doesn't mean retard as in thrust to idle. Because some times they come in on idle power anyway - so that doesn't make sense to say this.

No wait..that must be the crap flightsim I played..LOL. Yep - it does mean retard the throttles to idle on the whole..although some texts do explain this differently.

Sorry you're wrong. Retard means to close thrust levers=idle thrust. It's a reminder not an order. No jet aircraft ever (to my knowledge) approaches at flight idle. With high lift devices and the resultant drag a fair amount of thrust is needed to maintain speed whilst keeping it on a stable trajectory (typically 3 degrees).In an A319 (this video) around 50%(N1) thrust is required. I'm an airline pilot with over 10 years experience on jets so this isn't rubbish gleaned from flight sim! Cheers!
