Insite is a clean, safe environment where users can inject their own drugs under the supervision of clinical staff. Nurses and counsellors provide on-site access and referral to addiction treatment services, primary health care, and mental health providers, as well as first aid and wound care.
Insite was established in partnership with the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Police Department, PHS Community Services Society, and the Downtown East Side community. http://www.vch.ca/sis/

By building the injection centre you are saying yeah come do drugs. Whether or not these people have committed a crime is irrelevant. Everyone is entitled to health care. Refusing it to them would be tantamount to sentencing them to death. And yes, this counts as health care - it is disease prevention and health education. Thinking anybody chooses to be homeless is both ignorant and ridiculous. A society can best be judged by how it treats its poorest and most vulnerable. Ignoring it won't make the problem go away.

I do have compassion, but my compassion goes to victims - the brothers, sisters, parents and any innocent victim who they MIGHT rob and I use the word MIGHT - I know not all of them rob - and traumatise for money to feed their habit, so my compassion is there, just not misplaced. Assiting them is just prolonging their agony and others - thats my opinion, just because we don't have the same clear cut opinions does not mean I don't have compassion, just not the same as yours!

it is very shocking to me some of the comments that have been posted regarding this issue. it is sad to think that people assume that an addict is a criminal or an otherwise 'bad' person. addicts are PEOPLE, and could be your brother, sister, mother, father, coworker, doctor, police officer...the idea of safe injection sites, protects everyone, not just the drug user. and until you walk a mile in an addicts shoes, don't judge these people.

The idea is great. However, having a complete center with continued medical support is not realistic considering Canada's medical situation. I think the program would be much more viable if it could be done, first of all, outside, and second of all, if it didn't require permanent medical staff. Why not improving the street programs that focus on prevention and clean needle exchanges instead of wasting such economic and medical ressources. Honestly, we could use these elsewhere.

This is so wonderful!I wonder if my dad and aunt would still be alive,if they'd had this? I think so.I also think getting safe drugs from the government would save people's lives as well.Cheaper,better quality drugs would free up people's time so they could get counseling,spend the majority of their money on a place to live and healthy food to eat. Their quality of life would improve enabling them to do training,school and work.We could cut off the drug profits that only go to organized crime.

Insite is definitely NOT a waste of resources, and some arsonists around here do not know what they are talking about. The SIS is a great initiative with an exemplary history of its own, that should be disseminated all over the US. the wai i look at things is people smoke cigarettes without regard for their health. Ultimately the drug user is destroying their health. So, instead of having them literally lick rocks off the street lookin for drugs, robbing people, etc. this place is needed. The moral high road doesn't always work in this situation.
