Ive loved this song for years and I always thought it was about drugs, specifically coke. But if you look into it, it seems clear that they wrote it about the whole LA music scene at the time and how it swallows you up and takes away your soul. But it just goes to show that it is such a good song that it can be interpreted in different ways depending on the issues of the listener.

I think it's about a drug addict. like for example just listen to "you can check out anytime but you can never leave" and also "this could be heaven or this sould be hell" drugs makes you fell like your in heaven for a short time and then it's just like hell and then, "you can't stab the beast".. also ive been to Hotel California, and the atmosphere in there fits this song just perfect

actually, this song is about a fictional prostitute house in Southern California that a weary traveler finds himself trapped in. If you listen to the lyrics, the woman says, "we are all just prisoners here, of our own device," meaning they were all forced to become prostitutes due to their own misfortune and problems. It's the truth.

So, They wrote this song.
