"Gaza was not an ... ( 5 months ago by poetlifeart)
"Gaza was not an island. Alexander surrounded the city walls with earthwork, he was able to sap the towers...most of its male population died fighting, women and children were sold to slavary" he attached a city that had done him no harm, killed men and send its defenseless population of women and children into slavery." J.W. "Alexander" no my dear your "benovelent" destroyer of Tyre, Gaza and Parseh was no Cyrus. (and not because he lacked military skills)
"At the same time ... ( 5 months ago by poetlifeart)
"At the same time Ptolemy hustled Cleitus out of the room but a moment later ... at the sight of him (Cleitus) Alexander... snatched a pike...and ran him through" Which dear friend did Cyrus so killed? no my dear your conquering criminal hero was no Cyrus.
Should the Persians ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
Should the Persians then also not have taken Gaza? It's war and they chose not to surrender to the better warrior at any point when people who had surrendered to him were treated graciously. By the way, despite what's commonly told of Persians, slavery existed in Persia despite it being legally unapproved of. Alexander didn't treat well those who wouldn't surrender, no.
Come down a little? ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
Come down a little? The marriages were political. Darius offered him the western half of the empire and his daughter in marriage when he was on the run to save his own hide, so of course Alexander told him to piss off. And yes you are xenophobic. "Alexander was a Macedonian nobody, the sun of a minor ruler" "Macedonians primitive hords"
I didn't say ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
I didn't say Curtius tried to make him look bad with the crucifixion. Crucifying them while they were still alive would be unnecessary and most likely fabricated by Curtius. I already said crucifying already executed criminals was within Macedonian scope and would be fitting considering the actions of Tyre.
Yes, both drunk ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
Yes, both drunk during a holiday, after harassing and denigrating Alexander and his accomplishments, he killed Cleitus. Having actual knowledge about the whole ordeal I would say he probably deserved it although Alexander was inconsolable for days afterwards and would not eat or drink or see anyone. You're not telling me anything new. You know nothing about the character of Alexander, his life, or campaigning and yet you continue to throw out out of context pieces that you don't comprehend.
Since you're on the ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
Since you're on the warpath here, let me list a couple from the Persian side. Shortly after the battle at Issus I believe, Alexander set up a post for his wounded soldiers to stay and be taken care of. The Persians diced up the defenseless wounded soldiers. Also during a piss-poor "rescue" attempt of the harem the soldiers sent by Darius wasted precious time looting the area and killing noncombatants. When they got to the women, the Queen Mother refused to go with them.
So you knew that ... ( 5 months ago by poetlifeart)
So you knew that Alexander unleashed terror on cities that would not surrender to his criminal invasion. I was correcting your silly romaticization of a criminal man who unleashes terror and kills a friend in cold blood in an argument. Comparing him with Cyrus is stupid. That I think poorly of such criminal hord nobodies does not make me xenophobic. lol "Xenophobia" is general mistrust of foreigners not specific dislike of an invading force and their criminal leader. are u part Greek?
Are you a ... ( 5 months ago by poetlifeart)
Are you a Macedonian hords press secretary? putting spin on events, explaining away every criminal action? There was a general massacre in Tyre and furthermore at least one source says they lined up 2000 people by the beach and crucified them. Here is a man who murders a close friend, (of course according to you he "deserved" it) destroys three cities and its people, why is he not capable of these other crimes? Because you say so? lol you are a silly silly person.
Are you that daft? ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
Are you that daft? "Criminal invasion"? In what sense, on what planet. I recognize Alexander's shortcomings as well as his virtues, you however seem to be keen on demonizing him. I never compared him with Cyrus, you're the only one who's done that. I just said that he admired him and wanted to emulate him, which is factual. Are you that mindless and naive as to honestly think that Cyrus was a perfect saint who could do no wrong at any time?
Battle of Opis (The ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
Battle of Opis (The Nabonidus Chronicle) "After a ferocious battle, the forces of Cyrus captured Opis. And in some accounts, he or Nabonidus slaughtered the people of Akkad for their confusing stance in the battle."
Siege of Kapisa ( ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
Siege of Kapisa (Pliny) "The Siege of Kapisa took place during the rule of Cyrus the Great, the first emperor of Persia. He laid siege to this city and captured it, then in vengeance for the ruthless resistance destroyed it, or perhaps he might have burned it first, but the greatly preserved ruins are still seen today."
And you are a ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
And you are a stubborn braindead bitter fool, but not much we can do about that can we.
You have zero ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
You have zero concept of his character, life in the ancient world, or hellenic and macedonian society. Here's a tip for the future, how about reading a friggin decent book or two on Alexander before you start blabbering off on things you don't understand.
I believe I quoted ... ( 5 months ago by poetlifeart)
I believe I quoted various books on the life of Alexander throughout. The picture is not of silly romantic benevolence, you wrote earlier silly man. I do think what he did in Tyre and Gaza to his friend...were criminal. Of course I am bitter about the slaughter and crucification of citizens of Tyre who stood bravely in defense of their native city and alliance with people of Persia. Tyre! we remember.
You didn't read any ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
You didn't read any of those sources or the books. You looked for whatever sounded bad so you could throw it out there. It's beyond clear that you know nothing about Alexander, just that you hate him. I already explained to you the circumstances of the people in the fortress cities of Gaza and Tyre and briefly the situation with his traitorous friend. Not to mention a few atrocities of Darius' soldiers and of your beloved Cyrus.
They are quite ... ( 5 months ago by poetlifeart)
They are quite confusing account of that battle "some accounts" "Nabonidus slaughtered".... insufficient to smear his name.
You have a habit of ... ( 5 months ago by poetlifeart)
You have a habit of equating your prejudgments with truth which apparently extends to your knowledge of people's reading habits. When I was 12 I became ill because I would not eat or sleep properly just reading non-stop, I got up one day and my eyes went dark and lost balance. That summer I read 17 books. I have a PhD in mathematics, my art work has been displayed in art museums. You think you know me? traitorous friend. ? death for an argument? you have no shame Mr Macedonian spin man.
Unlike you I'm not ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
Unlike you I'm not trying to smear Cyrus' name, I'm just a human with a working brain who realizes that Cyrus was as human as Alexander or any person now or more aptly of the ancient world. The sections I quoted are from wikipedia. The sources for that information I put in parenthases though. The Nabodinus Chronicle is one of those accounts I could find as its cited from wikipedia. At the VERY least I've found and given you one definate destruction of a city by Cyrus.
I'm not a man you ... ( 5 months ago by hrtbreaker)
I'm not a man you dolt and I don't care about your past or what you do for a living. Obviously historical scholarship and the ancient world are not your thing.
