No, I am not Chinese. And Athens was so utterly forgettable that I had to look up the Opening Ceremonies here in YouTube to remember what took place. The only other Opening Ceremony aside from Beijing that made an impact was the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. That Archer who lit the torch was original and daring. And no, I'm not from Spain either. Beijing, for its part, was unforgettable for its scale, precision and grandeur. They quite simply, rocked the world.

I don't care what CHINA did or how big they did it, nothing can compare to Greek!!! It was magnificent in my lifetime to see the Olympics held in the place where they begun. Breathtaking and beautiful!!1

well eyestrained07, I suppose you did not understand the meaning or you did not get the emotion that the Athens ceremony conveyed, that's why you didn't like it. Don't even try to compare these two ceremonies. If you remember nothing of Athens let's see what you will remember in a few years of Beijing.

Maybe the fireworks (some of which were actually prerecorded) or the little girl who doubled the voice that was heard singing. Not to mention the 5 tracks that were repeated during the parade of athletes(it made me sick constantly hearing tha same - where is the unforgettable grandeur here??)....well...suit yourself, just don't say that the Athens ceremony was not at least one of the best ever (something which is worldwide acknowledged).

All about a show, olympic games is meaning, ideas and human glory not a show, not a hollywood movie and surely something to be scamed about like chinese did. Its about the human and what it can do all i saw at China was a show nothing more nothing else. Some ppl forgeting what olympic games is all about. If u want to see show go see a movie, when u want to see art watch those boring things like this one.

If that's your basis of argument, then maybe we should ban the UK from hosting the 2012 Olympics. What with their participation in the Iraq and Afghan war? Not to mention the long-standing controversial "occupation" of Northern Ireland. Since with all of this, the UK cannot possibly impart Olympic spirit.

and may I remind you, that SPORTS itself is all about STRUCTURED DISCIPLINE. Athletes train with grueling daily drills to be ThE BEST. You speak of "precision" as if it's a bad word. What the Chinese showed is how it can be used to create beauty. As for Athens, the only thing resonant about is that the Olympics returned where it first started. Beyond that, it was so forgettable.

oh and if you remember right, one of the overriding themes of the Olympics was that of a "TRUCE" among warring nations. So that means for a few days, conflicts in political ideologies and interest could be put aside so the nations can compete in athletics. So bringing up your political issues with China is kinda contradictory with another aspect of the Olympic spirit.

"TRUCE" or freedom of human and political rights, as you said is exactly what China DID not do during the recent olympic games. On the contrary it even banned some "illegal" -to them- sites from internet access in the olympic village. How outrageous is that!And you are still talking about having political issues with China. Well guess what he is not the only one. Another 5 billion people (the rest of the world)argue this is wrong and still China hosted the games as if was nothing happening.....

Precisely. China's and the world's focus those days was the OLYMPICS. It was for the ATHLETES. Not Tibet. Not Iraq. And not whatever political issues has been nagging the world. Would you rather have protesters in the middle of the games disrupting proceedings? Heck, they don't even allow political speeches in the Oscars and that's held in the US which is a democratic country. There is a time and place for everything. Take up your political issues with China with the UN and the ICJ.

all this arguing about how the Opening Ceremonies was just a "sham" and they have no business with the Olympics because they are an authoritarian government reeks of "sour grapes." The Chinese people put on a spectacular and magnificent Olympics and deserve credit for the hard work they put in to pull it off. To demean the people's hard work, artistry and discipline with political rhetoric reeks of bitter sour graping.

eyestrained07 you pay attention to the tree and miss the forest. The games convey the meaning of peace all over the world. And this meaning should also be conveyed and respected by the state of China (at least during the olympic games), something which China -i repeat again- DID NOT DO during the resent olympic games. If you still believe it was not hypocritical for China to host the OC while the Thibet and human rights issues were still on stake, then i can do nothing else to help you.

then let's ban the US, the UK, Israel, Palestine and god knows a host of other countries who have a long list of human rights violations in their resume from participating EVER in the Olympics. Yes, that's the way to go to foster international goodwill among nations outside of politics.
