Every third child is malnourished and the healthcare system is on the brink of collapse. Day laborers take their cooking utensils to the pawnshop before they go to work. In the evening, when they return home with a few kyat in their pockets and a small amount of food, they retrieve their utensils so that they can cook a meal.

It is believed well over 100,000 have perished in Burma from the cyclone and many thousands more from neglect by the government which has stonewalled, delayed, disorganized and also prevented well equiped and expert rescue teams from outside Burma to come to the aid of the poor suffering Burmese.
