Orthodoxy, like ALL religions, is a GRAND SHAM! We will never know if there was or is a 'god', but if there is, how do you explain all the pain and suffering, even of children, here on earth? NO benevolent 'god' would allow this!
Moments before I ... ( 3 months ago by ICXCNIKA)
Moments before I read your response, I was contemplating about suffering in the world, as with children, and how God seems to permit it. There is no easy answer for this. I can only tell you that Eastern Orthodoxy is a faith based on suffering and struggling; it doesn't give us a cheerful picture of the world. Christ speaks to me through the Orthodox Church, and so I know that He exists and is truly God. The wisdom of God is beyond us. But Christians have a duty to help others as best they can.
With all due ... ( 3 months ago by sophiegromit)
With all due respect, HOW does Christ exactly 'speak' to you? I think it's safe to assume that when people say things like 'Jesus speaks through me', they probably mean that they feel a lot of hope and love for a situation or life in general. We need a LOT of love and hope in world gone awry! I sort of feel where you're coming from, having grown up Greek Orthodox, but not entirely embracing it.

I'm 24. I grew up Greek Orthodox, but only began embracing Orthodoxy as a sophomore in high school when I got a different Godfather who began teaching my younger brother and myself about the faith. Since I was a child, Christ, through the Orthodox liturgical/spiritual life, has allowed me to perceive, to a very minor degree, the uncreated divine energies of the Holy Spirit. And I'm an extremely proud and sinful person, but in His mercy, Christ does make His presence known to me.

I see. I'm in my 40's, and have grown tired and cynical of religion in general. The Greek Orthodox faith is very spiritual and steeped in tradition, BUT to me, it's also VERY dated, and like other religions, ultimately meaningless since MORTAL MEN wrote the Bible, and ALL religious books, tomes, and manuscripts. I find my 'life energy' and meaning through my family, friends, nature (including animals), love, respect, and music. If the concept of Jesus works for you, then that's cool.
That's true that ... ( 3 months ago by ICXCNIKA)
That's true that mortal men both wrote and produced the books of the Bible. It's a matter of faith as to whether or not one believes the Holy Spirit guided them in this process. However, both the Orthodox Church and the New Testament, alike, make it clear that it is a woman, the Theotokos (a mortal woman), who, having been obedient to God, and thus rectifying the mistake of Eve, is the most honored and revered of all God's saints and even angels.

I appreciate the sources of your life energy because reading the writings of St. Silouan the Athonite, I learned how Christ's mercy is all-encompassing, and that we need to pray and show mercy towards all of creation, even demons! And so, in my prayers, I ask God to remember all people, plants, animals, insects, any other sort of organism, and all of His creation, and the angels, both good and bad. A Christian must show mercy and compassion towards all of creation.
Get real. If ... ( 3 months ago by sophiegromit)
Get real. If Christ's or God's 'mercy' is all-encompassing and good natured, then WHY WHY WHY would a benevolent God or son of God allow all the INTENSE pain and suffering, even of children, to occur? If there was or is a 'God', I don't believe it is a benevolent one. PROOF is here on Earth. Seriously.
I agree. The pain ... ( 3 months ago by ICXCNIKA)
I agree. The pain and suffering of the innocent in this world is beyond horrible, and it makes one question God's mercy. But humans were not made for this corrupted world. To quote the Orthodox Church of America: "It is the teaching of the Church that those who are innocently victimized by sickness, such as small children and retarded people, are certain to be saved in the Kingdom of God."
But why would not a ... ( 3 months ago by sophiegromit)
But why would not a supposedly benevolent 'God' create a world that is not 'corrupted' as you say? He/it has the power to do so, no? Many people DO live good lives, and die 'unscathed', with no real suffering, and a life of completeness and joy. Why can't EVERYONE have such a life? Can't God do this?
God did create the ... ( 3 months ago by ICXCNIKA)
God did create the world uncorrupted, and sharing in His glory. God's infinite love and mercy is displayed by the fact that He gave angels and humans the ultimate gift, free will. Adam and Eve abused this gift, and humanity, as a result, shares the consequences of their actions. All sickness and sorrow in the world is from the Devil and his demons. And God loves them just as He loves us humans. But if God were to stop the fallen angels from tempting us, He'd be violating their free will.
