Engineering an Empire - The Persians - Part 4of5
Uploaded by: wwbehrouz
Video Description:
The Persian Empire was one of the most mysterious civilizations in the
ancient world. Persia became an empire under the Cyrus the Great, who created a policy of religious and cultural tolerance that became the hallmark of Persian rule. Engineering feats include an innovative system of water management; a cross-continent paved roadway stretching 1500 miles; a
canal linking the Nile to the Red Sea; and the creation of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Mausoleum of Maussollos. The rivalry between Persia and Athens led to a 30-year war known as the Persian Wars, the outcome of which helped create the world we live in today. Peter Weller hos

"We are all Greeks" - the western world, its values and accomplishments in science, philosophy and literature have their roots in Greek culture!
The great Greek tragedy/drama is a Greek achievement, the principles of silogism that guide modern science are Greek (why hasn't the Eastern world developed science?), the principles of democracy and republic are Greek and Roman. That's why Western civilization is Greek/Roman (period). I mean no
offense to Persia but that's the only and simple truth!
I am a "Westerner" and my vision of the world is influenced by western values, even though I am aware of this fact and try to have an impartial attitude.
Nonetheless, in this case, it is very important to stress the fact that the Western civilization is the result of our Greek-Roman heritage that the Renaissance brought back to Europe after centuries of immersion into the darkness of the Middle Ages.
When it comes to God, I'm not very religious, the only religion that attracts me is Buddhism. Christianity has its origins in Judaism, since Christ was Jewish and at the time, Israel was part of the Roman Empire. Nonetheless, Christianism as we know it was developed in Rome and is now Europe's
main religion thanks to Constantine, the Roman Emperor. Nevertheless, Greek mitology still has an enormous influence in European literature and art.
