Ohh everyone talk ... ( 1 year ago by podertres)
Ohh everyone talk about Jessy's vibrato...please!! vibrato is natural in human voice as it is natural in air instrument like flutes...without vibrato there is not sound....and for the one who did say that this version is just dreadful....go home and study a bit of opera...because it is so crystal clear that you are a monumental ignorant

This voice is awesome but not right for the piece....However there are plenty of smaller voiced sopranos trying to screech through wagner and verdi and nobdy says anything so suck it up people!

..nice to see the score...you can really follow how she infuses her personality into it. Thanks Jessye for integrity, charisma, drama, honesty and -
There are many, ... ( 1 year ago by Glororum)
There are many, many wonderful performances of this, but I have to say that no one quite gets the poignancy of the first "remember me" quite like Jessye Norman. I love the innocence of Emma Kirkby's Dido, but the shear horror of that one line just knocks me sideways, makes my hair stand on end and no matter how many times I hear this I cry uncontrollably. Just goes to show what happens when the singer's interpretation and the listeners reading match.

It beats me why you guys think baroque should sound vibratoless? Amazing how you have stereotypes and stick to them like glue. Kirkby may be singing early German baroque pieces with her vibratoless voice which fits a sacred motet but that doesn't mean that every darned singer is going to do that with every darned baroque aria, early or no. Bah! There are different voices with different characteristics. And no textbook says that a baroque singer should use no vibrato..

I love her voice, and I don't think her vibrato is too much. I think I like Janet Baker's version better though...it brings tears to my eyes...

Baroque isn't ... ( 4 months ago by FloriaTosca85)
Baroque isn't supposed to sound vibratoless. The vibrato is just a used a bit differentely. It is about singing in the true spirit of an epoque, we cannot sing it as if it's Puccini...if 20 years ago Romantic portato was allowed and used as well as vibrato now we return to the true baroque sound which involves less vibrato, more control over voice and breathing. I adore Jessye Norman's Dido for the amazing expression and for the great control over her vibrato.

you might be right... but I am asking myself, if I have to become a baroque music professional to listen to some good rendition of Purcell???.... anyway: who can tell us how it REALLY was in those times???? ... Jessye is wonderfull as always... even if I prefer Leontyne....
...Shakespeare is a ... ( 2 months ago by brodsky96)
...Shakespeare is a baroque artist too... if one is not at eas with baroque english there might be some bitter misunderstandings... like NUNNERY in "Hamlet".... meaning convent or whore-house... so where should Ophelia go????.... we are not baroque english specialists, so we are happy to send Ophelia to a convent... even if....

I enjoyed Stephanie D'Oustrac,a young french mezzo in Dido and Aeneas. You don't have to be a pro to listen to Baroque, it's more about a feeling of right... Plus we do have 'reviews' of baroque performances and it's obvious that sound simply couldn't be heavy because you would not have the means at that time so it should be sang as it was written.
I suppose you refer to Leontyne Price whom I haven't heard singing Dido but I am mad about her approach in Romantic opera.
I just posted ... ( 2 months ago by brodsky96)
I just posted Dido's lament sung by Leontyne Price... the right feeling is good, but it is not all... this is discutable: its not a matter of means, I dont refer to the means but to the voice.... the human voice as it was 400 years ago and will be 400 years from now on... I love baroque music and listen to it dayly.... but I am not that scientific researcer who judges every small detail... on the other hand I think too much analyses could destroy the whole.... greetings!...
